OMNIVISION has launched the OV01D1R intelligent CMOS image sensor. This sensor is the first of its kind in the computing industry, designed to handle human presence detection (HPD), infrared (IR) facial authentication, and always-on (AON) functionality with a single, low-power camera. This sensor operates independently from the laptop’s RGB camera, ensuring continuous operation even when the RGB sensor is obstructed. With the increasing demand for privacy and the convenience of touch-free login, biometric authentication and HPD are becoming standard features in laptops. Traditionally, HPD has relied on AON streaming from the RGB sensor, but this functionality is compromised when a physical privacy shutter blocks the RGB sensor.

The key features include:

  • Utilizes PureCel pixel technology
  • Raw 1-megapixel (MP) image sensor
  • Low-power consumption
  • 1/6.13-inch optical format
  • Resolution of 1280 x 720 at 30 frames per second (fps)
  • Power consumption: 4.7mW at 3fps

The new sensor design offers a unique solution with its mono-IR + AON integrated camera. Even if the RGB sensor is blocked, the OV01D1R can still provide HPD and facial recognition capabilities. The device maintains ultra-low-power streaming for AON, with a 2-micron (µm) pixel, ensuring high sensitivity and modulation transfer function (MTF) performance. This advancement reduces costs and design complexity by integrating the functions of multiple sensors into one device. We are thrilled to see this technology in 2025 model laptops and beyond.”

The sensor features a mono-IR color filter array, supporting both HPD and facial recognition in a single sensing camera.Applications for this new sensor include notebooks, tablets, monitors, webcams, and home security cameras. It is now available for sampling, with mass production slated for Q4 2024.
