Gate Driver IC Enhances Safety In Automotive

Infineon Technologies AG has launched the MOTIX TLE9189 gate driver IC for 12 V brushless DC (BLDC) motors in safety-critical applications. This three-phase gate driver IC meets the needs of motor control ICs in by-wire systems. It complies with AEC Q100 Grade 0 and ISO 26262 (ASIL D) standards, making it suitable for brake-by-wire and steer-by-wire systems that replace traditional mechanical connections.

The gate driver IC suits automotive engineers and system designers focused on developing and deploying vehicle technologies. This product will benefit manufacturers working on automotive systems that replace traditional mechanical components with electronic solutions. It is also suitable for professionals in industries that require reliability and precision motor control in their electronic systems, such as robotics and aerospace, where compliance and safety standards are a priority.

The gate driver IC is offered in two packaging options: TQFP-48 (9 x 9 mm²) and VQFN-48 (7 x 7 mm²), allowing customers to select the most suitable package for their specific application requirements. The device operates within a supply voltage range of 4.2 V to 36 V and is optimized for 12 V automotive battery systems. It uses a traditional motor control strategy with PWM input and integrated current sense amplifiers for accurate current sensing.

Compared to similar devices, the TLE9189 stands out for its flexibility and control over gate sequencing. It also incorporates monitoring and diagnostic functions that oversee the device, inverter, and microcontroller interfaces. A distinctive feature of the product is Infineon’s patented adaptive MOSFET control function, which enhances EMC performance, achieves targeted switching times, and reduces power losses.
