Energy-Saving Microcontrollers Enforcing Industrial Automation

Renesas introduces microcontroller groups, emphasizing power efficiency, security, and touch technology for advanced applications.

Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan has introduced the RX261 and RX260 microcontroller (MCU) groups, integrating high power efficiency, touch sensitivity, and robust security features. Running at 64 MHz with an RXv3 core, these MCUs achieve only 69μA/MHz in active mode and 1μA in standby, making them ideal for a range of industries, particularly those engaged in building and factory automation, household appliances, and connected consumer devices. This launch caters to markets requiring enhanced energy efficiency and touch control, while upholding security standards critical for wireless consumer and industrial systems.

The recently launched MCUs also serves engineers and designers in sectors demanding high processing capability and reduced power consumption. Powered by RXv3 CPU core, these MCUs offer 2.5 times the processing capability of comparable 64-MHz MCUs, with 25% lower active current and 87% lower standby current, helping businesses meet stringent energy regulations and extend battery life in mobile or portable devices critical to sustained operation in varied environments.

Renesas’ third-generation capacitive touch IP (CTSU2SL) enhances noise immunity and water resistance, facilitating applications like kitchen appliances and outdoor smart devices. With automatic detection mode, current consumption is minimized in standby state, conserving power. Design guides and tuning tools further ease touch sensor integration across diverse devices.

Enhanced security is embedded in these MCUs, essential for wirelessly connected systems. Renesas Secure IP (RSIP-E11A) and flash protection functions safeguard against unauthorized access, preventing data breaches. They are designed to enable secure boot processes and firmware updates, offering reliable protection against potential attacks.

The RX261 MCUs feature additional hardware, including a full-speed USB controller and a CAN FD module, supporting stable communication in complex systems. Unlike competitors, this include 8KB data flash, eliminating the need for external EEPROM. “The RX130 and RX230 products have set a foundation, and the RX260/261 now brings advanced performance based on customer feedback,” noted Daryl Khoo, VP, Renesas.
